Homemade Butter (and Endless Flavor Possibilities)

There is something incredibly satisfying about making your own butter.

The first time I did it, I couldn’t believe how simple it was. Just one ingredient, a few minutes of mixing, and suddenly you have fresh, creamy homemade butter that tastes so much better than anything from the store.

The best part? Once you’ve made the butter, the fun really begins. Think strawberry jam folded into softened butter for your morning sourdough, chili crunch for a savory spread, cinnamon and honey for weekend pancakes, or fresh chives and flaky salt for a dinner-party-worthy butter board.

Once you start making your own flavored butters, it’s hard to stop.

Ingredients
  • 2 cups organic heavy whipping cream
  • Pinch of flaky sea salt (optional)

Flavor Ideas

  • Strawberry jam
  • Cinnamon and honey
  • Chili crunch
  • Fresh chives
  • Lemon zest
  • Roasted garlic
  • Hot honey
  • Fresh herbs
  • Maple syrup and cinnamon
  • Honey and flaky salt
Directions
Whip the Cream

Pour the organic heavy whipping cream into the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the whisk attachment.

Mix on medium-high speed.

First, the cream will become whipped cream. Keep going.

After several more minutes, the mixture will begin to separate. You’ll notice yellow butter solids forming and liquid buttermilk collecting in the bowl.

Strain the Buttermilk

Place a fine mesh strainer over a bowl and strain off the buttermilk.

Save it for pancakes, biscuits, or baking.

Wash the Butter

Transfer the butter to a clean bowl and pour cold water over it.

Using a spatula or your hands, gently press and knead the butter to release any remaining buttermilk.

Drain and repeat with fresh cold water until the water runs mostly clear.

This step helps the butter stay fresh longer.

Add Salt (Optional)

Mix in a pinch of flaky sea salt if desired.

Make It Your Own

Now comes the fun part.

Take a portion of the butter and mix in whatever sounds good:

  • Strawberry jam for the prettiest brunch spread
  • Cinnamon and honey for biscuits and toast
  • Chili crunch for a little heat
  • Chopped chives and flaky salt for a savory version
  • Lemon zest for spring gatherings
  • Roasted garlic for dinner parties

The possibilities are endless.
